Map of street art in Avignon (France)

Avignon was among the first cities Invader hit outside Paris: between 26 May and 1 June 2000 he set 41 mosaics into its walls in a single week, a blitz by any standard. The set is worth 710 points in the FlashInvaders game, and eleven pieces have gone missing since, a modest attrition rate for tiles cemented more than twenty years ago.

Painted walls concentrate inside the ramparts: a chained bird on rue de la Grande Monnaie, mosaics and pixel art around place Pie, and tags, paste-ups and stencils along the lanes running down towards the Rhône. The ATIPICC Production collective runs a guided walk devoted to these works with the tourist office, under the title Avignon tête en l'air.

The papal city has also turned to painting to deal with its eyesores: as part of the Prenez place(s) festival, a dozen street artists took on the bleakest facades, and thirty-five railway viaducts were earmarked for treatment. Each July the theatre festival fills the courtyard of the Palais des Papes, and fly-posting becomes part of the scenery in its own right.
