Map of street art in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia)
Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia and one of the highest capitals in the world, set at 2,350 meters altitude on the foothills of Mount Entoto. More than five million people coexist there in a mosaic of districts, from the old commercial center of Piassa to the modern towers of Bole.
The street art scene is recent, long held back by the absence of a local graffiti tradition. The Addis Street Art collective, founded in 2018 by Solomon Kifle, pushed the movement forward by collaborating with the Italian Cultural Institute, the Goethe-Institut, and the Alliance Éthio-Française to transform the walls of the Piassa district.
Since then, frescoes signed by Ethiopian artists like Behulum Mengistu — pioneer of "Amagraffi," blending Amharic script with graffiti codes — sit alongside international interventions (Basik, Van Orton, Nicola Varesco). Addis Ababa is gradually establishing itself as a new pole of East African muralism.
