Where to find street art in Bogotá (Colombia)
Street art arrived in Bogotá in the 1990s, initially treated as vandalism linked to social instability. A decisive turning point came in 2011 when 16-year-old artist Diego Felipe Becerra was shot and killed by police while painting a graffiti mural. The subsequent wave of protests led the city to decriminalize artistic graffiti and adopt Decreto 75, formally regulating and supporting the practice.
La Candelaria, the historic colonial center, is the primary hub for murals, with narrow streets covered in large-scale works and guided tours weaving through its alleys. Calle 26 — dubbed the city's open-air museum — stretches from La Candelaria toward El Dorado airport, lined with commissioned murals. La Macarena and Chapinero host vibrant, politically charged works addressing social issues.
Among the most prominent artists are DjLu, Stinkfish, Guache, and Toxicomano, whose murals address indigenous rights, corruption, and social resistance. The Meeting of Styles festival, held each autumn, brings together Colombian and international muralists. The city currently counts around 5,000 documented works spread across all its neighborhoods.
