Where to find street art in Santiago (Chile)
Santiago's mural tradition dates to the 1970s, when the Brigada Ramona Parra developed a distinctive style — filetes, figures with heavy black outlines — to spread left-wing political messages. Suppressed under the military dictatorship from 1973 to 1989, the scene revived in the 1990s with influences brought back by exiled artists from New York, Berlin, and Brazil.
Barrio Yungay, one of the city's oldest districts, and Barrio Bellavista are the main hubs of mural creation. The Museo a Cielo Abierto in San Miguel, inaugurated in 2010, brings together over 20,000 feet of murals depicting Mapuche culture and Chilean history. Barrio Lastarria, Barrio Brasil, and Barrio Italia complete the main artistic circuits of the capital.
ACB (Andrea Bernal), Chile's leading female graffiti artist since 1994, Inti Castro, and Cekis are among the most recognized figures of the scene. The social protests of October 2019 triggered an unprecedented artistic explosion, covering city walls with feminist murals, Mapuche symbols, and political slogans. The city currently counts between 600 and 1,000 active street artists.
