This resort on the island of Sal, in Cabo Verde, carries an aquatic mural.

The archipelago offers a particular configuration: a fabric often unfinished or under construction, breeze block and pale render walls in abundance, and an economy resting largely on beach tourism and on diaspora remittances. Painted surfaces are therefore available, and mural painting does not meet the heritage constraints of old European towns.

Marine motifs dominate, which is hardly surprising in an entirely island country whose culture and economy hang on the ocean. Cabo Verde also has an active art scene in Praia and Mindelo, often tied to music, and a mural practice mixing tourist commissions with identity assertion in Creole.
