Where to find street art in Plovdiv (Bulgaria)
Plovdiv is Bulgaria's second largest city and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, with more than six thousand years of settlement history. In 2019, it was designated European Capital of Culture, providing a strong impetus for the regeneration of its urban fabric and the growth of its arts scene.
The Kapana district — meaning 'the trap' in Bulgarian — is Plovdiv's main hub for street art. Once abandoned following the democratic transition of the 1990s, it was gradually transformed into a creative district from 2013 onwards, driven by local artists such as Stern (Dimitar Mehandzhiiski), Rocket01 and Nasimo. Mural competitions replaced random tagging with high-quality paintings, turning every alleyway into an open-air gallery.
Plovdiv hosts the annual 6Fest street arts festival, and its walls continue to attract national and international artists. The Kapana district, with its cafés, galleries and craft workshops, remains the living showcase of contemporary Bulgarian creativity.
