Map of street art in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode (Belgium)

This Brussels commune, one of the most densely populated in Europe, carries two murals in a warm register: a tower of stacked musicians, and a yellow leopard surrounded by tropical fruit in a naive style.

That last motif points to the make-up of the commune, whose population is among the most diverse in the Belgian capital. Mural painting there often serves to represent that diversity, in a deliberately accessible vocabulary, far from graffiti conventions.

The Brussels region runs an official trail listing more than one hundred and fifty works with free guided tours in three languages. It covers all nineteen communes, from the comic strip route downtown to the contemporary murals of Saint-Gilles and Molenbeek, and makes Brussels one of the rare capitals where urban art is treated as continuous public policy.
