Map of street art in Charleroi (Belgium)
Charleroi is the largest city in Wallonia, in southern Belgium, the former capital of the Pays Noir steel and coal basin. Marked by deindustrialisation and the closure of its mines, the city has gradually reinvented itself since the 2010s around urban tourism, street art and the UNESCO-listed Bois du Cazier site.
Its street art scene grew around the Asphalte biennial, launched in 2014 by the City of Charleroi, which invites international artists to paint city-centre façades and revive empty gable walls. ROA, Sixe Paredes, Stinkfish, Faith47 and Bordalo II have all painted monumental works there.
Charleroi also offers a dedicated street art walking trail and several industrial wastelands repurposed as cultural venues, drawing an alternative tourism curious about the 'post-industrial brutalism' the city now claims as its own.
