Map of street art in Antwerpen (Belgium)
Antwerp's graffiti scene emerged in the 1980s, driven by New York's hip-hop culture. The Muntplein became the gathering point for early writers in the 1990s, when Arno Arnouts - widely regarded as the godfather of Antwerp graffiti - ran the Bug-T jams and mentored a generation of artists including ROA and Dzia. By 1998, the city was hosting one of the world's first regular Meeting of Styles events.
Berchem is now the most concentrated area for street art, with the Zomerfabriek as its epicentre: Rise One, Joachim, Super A, and Pablo Piatti have all left large-scale work there. Borgerhout extends the scene with monumental interventions. The Sint-Andries district in the city centre mixes local and international output across its building facades.
ROA, known for monumental black-and-white wildlife paintings, and Dzia, one of Belgium's most recognised street artists, have cemented the city's international reputation. With 263 officially listed works, Antwerp holds the highest concentration of urban art in Flanders. Guided tours cover the different neighbourhoods and their overlapping artistic histories.
