Map of street art in Alger (Algeria)
Algiers is the capital of Algeria, spread in amphitheater shape along the Bay of Algiers facing the Mediterranean. Its districts layer the Ottoman heritage of the Casbah, the Haussmann urbanism inherited from French colonization, and the modern developments of independence, in an architectural mosaic rare in North Africa.
The Algiers street art scene long remained discreet, constrained by official norms and the absence of structured festivals. The DJART festival, launched in 2014, marked a turning point by inviting international artists like eL Seed to work on city-center facades, particularly along Boulevard Didouche Mourad.
Since the Hirak movement of 2019, a new generation of Algerian artists — Sneak, Lokher, El Moustache — has occupied walls and stencils to carry an urban voice, blending Arabic calligraphy, heritage references, and political critique. Algiers is gradually emerging as a visible ground for North African urban creation.
