Painted in 1984 by Fernando Sordo Juanena, a drawing teacher at the Instituto El Greco, this wall measuring 14 by 3.5 metres closes off a sloping alley in the historic centre of Toledo. The composition reads in three registers: a pastel still life of a laid table, Toledo Cathedral reduced to cubist volumes, then a tower dissolving into the sky. Sordo's sketch beat 32 others in a blind competition whose jury included painter Rafael Canogar, and the slice of watermelon at street level has become the mural's signature.
