Born in 1976 in Tbilisi, Dato Machavariani, known as Kakadu, graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. During his student years he played drums alongside Irakli Charkviani, in one of the defining bands of independent Georgia. Since 1997 he has published comics and illustrations in Georgian magazines and newspapers, deliberately sticking to paper, pencil and ink rather than digital tools. …

On a blind gable wall in the Mtatsminda district, King Rostevan and his daughter Tinatin stand out in black and white, framed by the rooftops of Tbilisi's old town and a stone lion. Both figures come from The Knight in the Panther's Skin, Shota Rustaveli's poem, whose characters the artist has been drawing for years. Only the sunburst and the ornaments on the headdresses are gold, the rest is an ink drawing scaled up to the wall by Irakli Kadeishvili.
