Keulion, born on 1 July 1987 in Douala and who died in 2023, was a Cameroonian visual artist trained at the doctoral school of visual arts at the University of Yaoundé 1. His work, often compared to that of Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, is built on a pictogram writing system he called Banka, after a culture of western Cameroon. The grey wall disappears beneath a dense weave of black pictograms, eyes, fish, faces and spirals, drawn in solid line in the writing system the Cameroonian artist Keulion called Banka. Over it unfolds a large abstract face drawn in outline alone, in red, pink, white, blue and yellow, like a mask laid across the weave. The work is signed and dated 2023 in white cursive at the foot of the wall.
