This colossal bearded old man is a large-format paper paste-up by Marseille artist Baze, whose real name is Nicolas Henriot, applied to the concrete wall running along the railway tracks at the Friche la Belle de Mai. The portrait is built entirely from dense black and white hatching close to woodcut engraving, a signature Baze uses on walls as much as in his illustrations. Only the eyes escape the monochrome: a vivid green, they stare out at the viewer from deep within the beard. Torn paper edges and red drips left by later interventions add to the weathering of what has become one of the most recognisable images in Marseille street art.
