Esk Reyn is a multidisciplinary artist born in Istanbul in 1987, where he still lives and works. He started painting graffiti in 2000, enrolled at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 2006 and joined its sculpture department in 2008. Painted in September 2013 for the CityLeaks festival, this Esk Reyn mural covers the gable of a building on Stammstraße, in Ehrenfeld. The Istanbul artist stacks three states of matter: a mass of fleshy blood-red lobes at the top, a single, highly realistic eye in the middle, and below it a turquoise tangle of pipes, pistons and circuitry that dissolves into drips. The design originally stood out against a large black capsule shape, now weathered to grey, and the foot of the wall has been taken over by tags. The ESK REYN signature, sprayed in the same turquoise, is still legible to the right of the mural.
