Lucy McLauchlan, born in England in 1977, is a British artist based in Birmingham and co-founder of the Beat13 collective alongside Matthew Watkins. Painted for the CityLeaks festival in 2011 on the former Ehrenfeld freight depot, this monumental composition fills the entire gable in grey, beige and charcoal, with red as its only accent. A scarlet disc ringed by a crown of white rays tops the wall, and from it a long stem descends and branches into broad pale ribbons; at the lower left, an almond-shaped pod encloses three discs striped with red. This vocabulary of organic forms and radiating patterns, brushed in black and white, is characteristic of the British artist.
