Klaus Klinger, born in 1954 in Essen, is a muralist based in Düsseldorf. He studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1973 to 1980, under Gerhard Richter among others, and in 1977 co-founded the Wandmalgruppe Düsseldorf, out of which the non-profit Farbfieber grew in 1987. Painted in 2005 by Klaus Klinger with the Majobrothers and the Farbfieber e.V. association, this monumental mural unfolds as a dreamlike landscape: a city in balance, cogwheels, an airship, an open eye, a cyclist, and a woman with shopping bags climbing a painted staircase down to street level, where the paint meets the real steps. The gable stands at Ackerstraße 59, beside the railway at the foot of the stairs that lead into the district, hence its title, the gate to Flingern. The mural tells the story of this working-class, multicultural neighbourhood, on a wall lent by the Buchwald family, who ran the local barbershop for generations.
