The face of a bearded prehistoric man fills the full height of the underpass wall, painted in warm browns against a landscape backdrop. The motif points straight at the Neander valley two kilometres away, where the first Neanderthal fossil was unearthed in 1856, making it Erkrath's unofficial emblem.
