A trompe-l'oeil in shades of grey opening an imaginary alley into the wall, lined with façades whose capitals, cornices and domes draw on Art Nouveau and the baroque. Two black silhouettes in overcoats and bowler hats, an adult and a child, stand with their backs to us in the foreground, watching the perspective recede towards a distant bell tower. A gull crosses the scene at top left.
