João Varela is a Portuguese lettering artist, calligrapher and type designer based in Lisbon. Everything typographic interests him, from typefaces and logos to murals and calligraphy, and each time he sets out to work with a different material, scale and style. He graduated with honours from the Master in Type Design at ECAL, Lausanne, in 2020.

Lettering painted in August 2021 by Portuguese calligrapher and type designer João Varela, on a pink panel five metres by four and a half. The two words interlace into a symmetrical composition of thick and thin strokes outlined in white, woven until they form a monogram. He conceived it in response to the successive lockdowns: one learns, and does so much more, in a collaborative environment, hence "Better Together". As the photo is a wide shot, the neighbouring portrait by Mr. Garpear appears on the right, then the start of a blue mural: three interventions follow one another with no transition along the same wall.
