Biography
Stéphane Wootha Richard is an illustrator and concept artist. He made a living from music for ten years, then from software development for six, before taking up digital drawing seriously at thirty-six, first as a comics colourist, then as an illustrator, and finally freelance for animation, video games, publishing and television, notably for Netflix, Ankama and Legendary.
In 2021 he left the animation industry and released ninety gigabytes of his working files for free. That is also when his practice shifted to the wall, under the name Semiostalgia, which he translates as nostalgia for meaning.
The work takes the form of raw earth sculptures placed on the medieval walls of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, in south-western France. Modelled directly against the stone, they erode with the rain and eventually vanish, which is part of the project: each piece is designed to last a season, no more. Each one is documented online, accompanied by a text of his own.
