Aniekan Udofia

Biography

Aniekan Udofia is an American painter and muralist of Nigerian descent born in 1976. He grew up between Washington DC and Nigeria, and trained at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) and the Maryland College of Art & Design, supplementing his education with intensive study of comic-book illustration and hip-hop album artwork (GZA, Organized Konfusion).

In the 2000s, he became an editorial illustrator for major magazines such as XXL, Vibe, and FRANK151. He later shifted to muralism through public commissions in Washington DC, becoming one of the federal capital's most recognized urban artists with more than twenty-five frescoes to his name.

His works pay tribute to African American cultural figures — Duke Ellington, Marvin Gaye, Harriet Tubman, the Obamas — in a large-scale photorealistic style. His "The Torch" mural on the walls of Ben's Chili Bowl, unveiled in 2017, has become one of the visual landmarks of the U Street corridor, a historic Black neighborhood in Washington.
