Biography

Daku, real name Hanif Kureshi, was an Indian artist and designer born on October 12, 1982, who passed away on September 22, 2024, at the age of 41. He is one of the founders of India's contemporary street art movement, and co-founded the St+art India Foundation in 2013, which established several open-air art districts across the country.

His practice centered on typography and text: hand-painted letterforms, vernacular typefaces, metal sign installations that cast shadows as the sun moves. He initiated the HandpaintedType project (2011), documenting traditional Indian hand-painted signage, and the Lodhi Art District in New Delhi, India's first public art district.

His works explore time, memory, and impermanence through the typographic medium. His best-known piece, "Time Changes Everything" (2015–2016) at Lodhi Colony, makes words appear and disappear through sun-cast shadows, literally making visible the idea that meaning shifts according to the time of day.
