Biography
Criola, real name Tainá Lima, is an Afro-Brazilian street artist born in 1990 in Belo Horizonte. Holding a degree in Fashion Design from UFMG, she began painting in 2008 and turned to graffiti in 2012. Her art is a direct response to racism experienced by herself and her ancestors: "My art was the way I found to manifest and denounce the racism that my ancestors and myself experienced throughout life."
Her monumental frescoes summon Black female figures through an iconography blending African symbolism, indigenous Brazilian spirituality, tropical flora, and bodily themes — reproductive organs, serpents, feathers — in saturated color palettes. Several of her works have faced racist challenges from residents, leading to court battles that have reinforced her national recognition.
Based in São Paulo since the mid-2010s, the artist has exhibited in the United States (Las Vegas, Miami), France, Belarus, Portugal, and Sweden. She has participated in Belo Horizonte's CURA festival since 2018 and collaborates with Brazilian feminist collectives.
