Biography

Oscar Sandoval, better known as Oscar Axo, is a Mexican muralist born in 1984 in Oaxaca, to parents of Mixtec origin. He grew up immersed in the indigenous culture of southern Mexico - textiles, codices, traditional music, the Mixtec and Zapotec languages - which inform all of his adult practice.

He paints large-scale hyper-realist portraits of women and children from Oaxaca dressed in festive clothing (huipil, rebozo, jaguar headdress), often accompanied by elements drawn from pre-Hispanic codices and musical motifs. His murals use quartz-grade mineral paints, resistant to outdoor conditions, with particular care for the modelling of fabric and skin.

He paints in Mexico, Peru, France, Spain, Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria. His Sonidos Ancestrales mural, painted at the Street Art City complex in Lurcy-Lévis in 2024, ranked 9th best mural in the world on Street Art Cities.
