Biography

Chen Yingjie, better known as Hua Tunan, is a Chinese artist born in 1991 in Foshan, Guangdong province. Trained in traditional Chinese painting by his father, he crossed this ink technique with graffiti and contemporary aerosol from his teens onwards, building a hybrid visual grammar that is instantly recognisable.

His works stage totemic animals from Chinese iconography — tigers, lions, eagles, dragons, pandas, birds — unfurled in splatters and drips that seem to come alive on the wall. He signs his pieces with red calligraphic seals, in a nod to the traditional format of Chinese scholar prints.

He has painted in Foshan, Beijing, Taipei (Foshan Lion Dance, 2015), Honolulu (POW! WOW! Hawaii), Wynwood (Miami) and Hong Kong, and collaborates with brands like Louis Vuitton, Adidas, Nike, Jaguar, Volvo and Disney. He shows with Mazel Galerie in Brussels and Singapore, and has been artist in residence at the Honolulu Museum of Art.
