Biography
Mathias Köhler, better known as Loomit, is a German artist born in 1968 in Tutzing, near Munich. He started writing graffiti in 1983 by painting a water tower in Buchloe, and is part of the very first generation of European graffiti, shaped by the visits of American pioneers and the emerging hip-hop culture.
From the late 1980s onwards he made his name with monumental murals — notably Geyrareal in Munich (1989), for a long time the largest graffiti piece in the world — trains, grain silos and trucks. His visual grammar combines narrative figuration, classical lettering and a saturated palette, in a style that favours legibility and storytelling.
He has painted in more than 80 countries, including Vietnam, Peru, Iran, Mexico and across Europe. A member of The Wallstars crew and co-founder of the Munich Urban Art Show festival, he took part in the Betonliebe project in Nuremberg-Langwasser in 2021. His work is held by the Museum of Urban Art Hamburg and published in several monographs.
