Biography
Niels 'Shoe' Meulman is a Dutch artist born in 1967 in Amsterdam, regarded as one of the founding figures of European graffiti. He started writing in 1979 under the name SHOE, and joined the 1980s international circuit alongside Dondi White, Rammellzee and Keith Haring, hosting them during their European visits.
In 2007 he founded the Calligraffiti movement, a fusion of Western calligraphy and street graffiti that claims the written word as image and the gesture as painting. His practice combines aerosol, ink, paint and large-scale installations, across walls, canvases, ceramics and books.
He is held in the permanent collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and STRAAT Museum Amsterdam, where he inaugurated the gallery in 2021 with his solo show What The Fuck. He collaborated with Shepard Fairey on the Raise the Level mural in Amsterdam (2023), published several books with From Here to Fame and Lannoo, and shows with Unruly Gallery in Amsterdam.
