Biography
DabsMyla is an Australian art duo founded in 2007 by Darren 'Dabs' Mate (born 1981) and Emmelene 'Myla' Mate (born 1984), who met at illustration school in Melbourne. Based in Los Angeles since 2009, the couple developed a visual grammar that draws on graffiti, classic American animation (Hanna-Barbera, Disney, Looney Tunes) and mid-century design.
Their murals combine hyper-saturated cartoon characters signed Dabs with photo-realistic landscapes signed Myla, on pop-art palettes with crisp outlines and flat fills. The duo has also produced notable collaborations with Sanrio (Hello Kitty), the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, Modernica and the Bob Baker Marionette Theatre in Los Angeles (2016).
They have painted in Los Angeles, Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro, London, Detroit, Norway and Tahiti, and show with Thinkspace Projects in Los Angeles and Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne. They are also represented by Vertu Fine Art in Miami and Munky King in Los Angeles.
