Biography
David Hooke, better known as MEGGS, is an Australian artist born in 1980 and based in Melbourne. A graphic-design graduate of Swinburne University in 2000, he began painting in the street in 2003 and co-founded the Everfresh Studio collective in Collingwood in 2004, which brings together Melbourne's leading muralists.
His visual grammar draws on comics culture, superheroes, traditional masks and Australian flora, in saturated complementary-colour compositions. The artist plays on fragmented figures, paint drips and abstract backgrounds to turn the mural into a space of visual narrative.
MEGGS has painted in Melbourne (ACDC Lane, Flinders Lane, Croydon 2020), Sydney, London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Paris and at POW! WOW! Hawaii. He shows with Thinkspace Projects in Los Angeles, Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne and Inner State Gallery in Detroit.
