Biography
CYRCLE is a Los Angeles art collective founded in 2010 by David 'Davey' Torres and David Leavitt, briefly joined by Devin Liston. Coming from Californian tag graffiti, the two founders developed a visual grammar inspired equally by classical statuary, Russian propaganda posters and advertising typography.
Their signature — classical figures rendered in halftone, a palette restricted to black, white and orange, inverted slogans, the CYRCLE wordmark with its central Y — runs a critical reflection on power, mortality and the fall of idols. The murals are painted with rollers and large-scale stencils.
The collective painted Magic Is Real (Bedrock Studios, Los Angeles 2012), All Idols Have Clay Feet (Shoreditch London 2013), Faith! Courage! Power! Growth! (Las Vegas 2014) and takes part in the POW! WOW! Hawaii, Wynwood Walls, Life is Beautiful and Nuart festivals. They show with StolenSpace in London and Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco.
