Biography
Rafael Gerlach, better known as SatOne, is a German-Venezuelan artist born in 1977 in Venezuela and based in Munich. He started writing graffiti in 1990s Munich, then progressively moved towards a singular abstract-figurative painting, halfway between analytical Cubism, animation and digital illustration.
His murals build through layered translucent planes, fragments of landscapes, angular silhouetted figures and clouds of colour. Saturated complementary palettes - deep blues, blood reds, off-whites - create compositions that seem to vibrate between figuration and pure abstraction.
He has painted in Munich, Mannheim (Insomnia, 2015 for Stadt.Wand.Kunst), Berlin, São Paulo, Hong Kong, Vienna, Athens and Cologne. Represented by Open Walls Berlin and The Gabba Gallery in Los Angeles, he published his monograph Drift with Drago Publisher in 2017.
