Biography

Sten Lex is an Italian duo of artists born in 1982, Sten in Rome and Lex in Taranto, regarded as the pioneers of stencil graffiti in Italy. They began collaborating in Rome in the early 2000s and invented in the mid-decade the 'hole school stencil' technique, where the stencil itself is preserved on the wall as an integral part of the work.

Their visual grammar - photo-realistic halftone portraits, geometric landscapes, hypnotic parallel-line patterns - relies on breaking down source images into thousands of cutter-traced fragments. The duo works almost exclusively in black and white, at very large scale, monumentalising the precision of the stencil.

Their work can now be seen in Rome, London, Paris, Barcelona, New York, Madrid (Paisaje Vallecas, 2016) and at the MACRO in Rome. They have taken part in the Walk This Way (Køge, Denmark), Nuart (Stavanger) and Outdoor (Rome) festivals, and published the monograph Sten & Lex with Drago Publisher.
