Biography
Hush is a British artist born in 1976 in Newcastle upon Tyne, where he still lives and works. A graphic-design graduate of the Newcastle School of Art and Design, he came to prominence in the mid-2000s with stencil portraits of women overlaid with layers of wheatpaste, stickers and tags that saturate the figure to the point of near-abstraction.
His central imagery — geishas, manga girls, Asian pin-ups — emerged from a formative stay in Japan, where he worked as a toy designer, and an interest in Hokusai's ukiyo-e. He overlays these female faces with graffiti motifs, typography strips and woodblock collages to weave Eastern tradition with street grammar.
He shows with StolenSpace in London, Corey Helford in Los Angeles and Kumi Contemporary, and was named among the 'Top 20 Up and Coming Artists' by The Independent in 2016. Hush regularly paints walls in Newcastle, London, Los Angeles, Eugene (USA) and Paris, where he completed the Geisha-02 mural in the 13th arrondissement in September 2023.
