Biography

Kelly Graval, better known as RISK, is an American artist born in 1967 in New Orleans and based in Los Angeles. Often called the 'godfather of West Coast graffiti', he began writing in 1982 and founded the WCA (West Coast Artists) crew in 1985, the first structured graffiti federation in the western United States.

He rose to prominence in the 1980s through heaven spots - inaccessible pieces painted on the freeway signs of the Los Angeles motorways - and popularised freight-train bombing on a national scale. His signature drips and saturated colour clouds became an instantly recognisable visual marker.

The artist received the first legal mural permit delivered by Los Angeles in over a decade. He has collaborated with Shepard Fairey on the Skid Row Project, with Ice Cube, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Michael Jackson, and founded Third Rail, the first clothing brand run by a graffiti writer. He shows with Beyond the Streets, GGA Gallery and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
