Biography
Thierry Guetta, better known as Mr. Brainwash (often abbreviated MBW), is a French-American artist born in Garges-lès-Gonesse in 1966. Based in Los Angeles since childhood, he began by compulsively filming West Coast street artists — Shepard Fairey, Invader, Banksy — before starting to paint himself in the mid-2000s.
He gained worldwide notoriety in 2010 with Banksy's documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, in which he plays himself. The same year, his Life is Beautiful exhibition in Los Angeles drew 50,000 visitors and cemented his signature style: pop silhouettes, spray drips, optimistic slogans (Life is Beautiful, Follow Your Heart, Never Give Up), and remixes of Warhol and Lichtenstein.
The artist has since painted dozens of murals across the United States, designed album covers for Madonna and Rick Ross, and opened the Mr. Brainwash Art Museum in Beverly Hills in December 2022 — the first contemporary art museum conceived and operated by a living artist.
