Futura 2000

Biography

Leonard Hilton McGurr, better known as Futura 2000, was born in 1955 in Park Slope, Brooklyn. He started writing graffiti in the New York subway in 1970, aged fifteen, and by the late 1970s had imposed a radical style for the era: spray abstraction, exploded forms and cosmic atmospheres that broke with classical lettering.

A pioneer of a conceptual approach to graffiti, he painted the seminal subway piece Break in 1980. From the early 1980s he collaborated with The Clash (album covers and live performances), Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, becoming one of the first bridges between graffiti and contemporary art.

Since the 2000s Futura has parallel-built a sought-after design career (UNKLE, Supreme, Off-White, Nike, BMW Art Car) and exhibits in major international galleries. His Breaking Out retrospective at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (2023-2024) and his show at the Bronx Museum (2024-2025) confirm his standing as a historic figure who is still active.
