Biography

Stik is a British street artist born in London in the early 1970s. Shaped by years of homelessness and precarity in the 2000s, he developed in Hackney a minimalist visual signature: stick figures drawn with six lines and two dots, expressive enough to convey tenderness, fear or defiance.

His murals, painted in black ink on flat colour backgrounds, narrate the gentrification of the East End, the displacement of working-class communities and the fragility of the social fabric. Big Mother on Acton's Charles Hocking Estate (2014), briefly the UK's tallest mural, and Sleeping Baby at Homerton Hospital (2015) have become public landmarks.

Stik uses his visibility to fund community causes: print sales have raised tens of thousands of pounds for the NHS, homeless shelters and local schools. He has collaborated with Thierry Noir, ROA and the British Museum, and shows regularly with Maddox Gallery.
