Biography
Caledonia 'Callie' Curry, better known as Swoon, was born in 1977 in New England and has been based in Brooklyn since 1999. A Pratt Institute graduate in painting, she shifted to the street in the early 2000s and became one of the first women to gain international recognition in the street art movement.
Her practice centres on large hand-cut or printed paper portraits that she wheatpastes onto stone walls, abandoned buildings and historic façades. The figures - often inspired by friends, children or family scenes - bring a fragile human presence to overlooked corners of the city.
Beyond the wall, she has built an activist body of work through the Heliotrope Foundation: saving a church in Braddock, Pennsylvania, rebuilding homes in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, and sailing handmade rafts at the Venice Biennale (Swimming Cities). Her interventions have marked Djerba, Detroit, New Orleans, Havana, Hong Kong, Cairo and Tokyo.
