Biography
Brian Donnelly, known as KAWS, is an American artist born in 1974 in Jersey City. He began tagging rooftops in New Jersey as a teenager, then moved to New York in the 1990s where he developed a distinctive subvertising practice: intervening on bus shelter, phone booth and billboard ads by adding his own X-eyed characters to the existing imagery.
A graduate of New York's School of Visual Arts, he built a visual universe around pop culture figures — Mickey Mouse, the Smurfs, Snoopy, SpongeBob — recast as hybrid creatures named Companion, Chum or BFF. His hard-edge paintings and vinyl toys quickly positioned him at the intersection of street art, design and contemporary art.
From the 2000s onwards, KAWS has produced monumental sculptures (Holiday, Companion) shown from Hong Kong to Doha, and collaborated with Dior, Uniqlo and Comme des Garçons. Represented by Galerie Perrotin, he regularly tops contemporary auction records.
