Biography

JR, born in 1983 in Paris, is a French photographer and street artist who calls himself a "photograffeur". From 2004 he began pasting large-format black-and-white portraits on the walls of the Paris suburbs, then around the world. Winner of the TED Prize in 2011, he launched Inside Out the same year, a global participatory project that has since enabled more than 500,000 people to paste their portraits in public spaces. His monumental interventions — Face 2 Face between Israel and Palestine (2007), Women Are Heroes, the trompe-l'oeil collage that made the Louvre Pyramid "vanish" (2016) and The Secret of the Great Pyramid (2019) — explore identity, memory and civic participation. He is represented by Perrotin, Pace Gallery and Galleria Continua.
