Biography

AL1 (real name Alain Guilloteau) is a street artist based in Angers, originally from Vendée. A former IT analyst, he turned to drawing full-time in 2013 after a serious health incident. He works exclusively in pastel on large drawing paper, which he then pastes onto the city's walls — a deliberately ephemeral practice. His monumental portraits pay tribute to figures of culture, resistance and everyday life: Samuel Paty, Commander Massoud, Jean-Pierre Bacri, Jean-Paul Belmondo, and the caregivers of the COVID lockdown. For AL1, "culture is the only weapon against every form of fanaticism." In Angers, he co-signed the 2019 fresco "Aubade à Jeanne Moreau" with Florent Maussion.
