Biography

Kiptoe — born Matt Dean — is an American muralist who grew up in New Hampshire and has been based in Los Angeles since 2015. After graduating in illustration in Massachusetts, he developed a hybrid style merging hyperrealism with the visual language of American comics, recognisable through dynamic framing, saturated palettes and animal figures captured in full motion.

A specialist of very large-scale murals — some exceeding fifty metres — the artist drew international attention with his hand-painted stop-motion animations: each frame is painted on the wall, photographed, then erased and repainted in place. In 2018 he was invited to the Street Art Fest Grenoble-Alpes, where he created "Epic Fight", a series of rolling shutters depicting a bird with incandescent feathers caught in an epic struggle. The five-day frame-by-frame performance produced a video that quickly went viral.

Known for his recurring avian imagery — a nod to the reversed proverb "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush", a manifesto for creative risk-taking — Kiptoe has collaborated with HBO, NBC Sports, Walt Disney World, TNT and Fortnite. His work is documented on kiptoe.com, his Instagram account @kiptoe1 and his YouTube videos, which have gathered hundreds of thousands of views.
