Biography
Xoana Álvarez Martín is a Galician artist from O Grove (Pontevedra, Spain). She studied economics, cultural and social anthropology, and specialised in illustration at the School of Arts in Granada, where she began painting professionally in 2008. In 2013, she returned to Galicia and co-founded the cooperative Cestola na Cachola with Miguel Peralta and Raquel Doallo, creating murals, paintings, and illustrations.
Her work features narrative figures, predominantly female subjects, exploring identity and personal stories. Drawing on classical and contemporary Galician artistic traditions, she has produced over one hundred murals across Galicia, Spain, and internationally, including "Lavandeiras do Sarela" (2020) for the feminist art festival Delas Fest in Santiago de Compostela, as well as works in San Sebastián (2023), Paris (2024), and Rennes (2023).
For more than a decade, Xoana Almar has actively shaped the mural and urban art scene in Galicia and beyond, regularly collaborating with her cooperative peers on transnational projects.
