Biography
Born in 1977 in Lisbon, Mário Belém studied graphic design at the Ar.Co school. He worked as a digital illustrator and designer between 2002 and 2015, before turning fully to his own artistic practice. Now based in Carcavelos, near Lisbon, he has become one of the recognizable figures of contemporary Portuguese urban art.
His visual language is defined by colorful and playful compositions that pair imagery with typography to build short poetic narratives. The artist explores communication, popular culture and the human condition, blending familiar elements with surrealist imagery. He moves easily between intimate studio works and the large-scale murals that adorn several Portuguese cities.
His reach extends well beyond Portugal: he took part in the MURO 2016 festival in Lisbon (with the mural "Sonha Mais Alto" in Bairro Padre Cruz), has shown work in galleries in Amsterdam, Paris and New York, and joined artist residencies in China, Tunisia and France. Mário Belém stands among the regular contributors to the renewal of European urban art.
