James Micallef Grimaud

Biography

James Micallef Grimaud, known as Twitch, was born in Malta in 1979. He is recognized as the pioneer of street art on the Maltese islands, having started painting graffiti in the streets of Malta in the mid-1990s when no other artists were working in this medium on the island. He describes himself as an "artist-anarchist" whose practice explores fragility, transformation, and the cultural dematerialization of Mediterranean society.

His career spans a wide range of practices: monumental murals, public space installations, and gallery exhibitions. Notable projects include a spectacular installation on a 70-meter crane in Malta's Grand Harbour in 2018, as part of the V18 cultural program, and international works in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, European Capital of Culture 2018.

In 2022, he completed Malta's largest mural on an apartment block on Forrest Street in St Julian's. This project, initiated by STJ Canvas, received the first official planning permission granted for a mural of this scale in Malta. He is the founder of the Troglodyte street art collective and regularly exhibits at 2B Gallery in St Julian's.
