Alexis Diaz

Biography

Alexis Díaz was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and grew up in the Santurce neighborhood. He studied at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas de San Juan, graduating with a degree in painting in 2008. After a brief period in commercial design, he created his first mural in October 2010 on Avenida Fernández Juncos in Santurce — an act of defiance against a deteriorating wall, executed with Chinese ink and a thin brush.

His technique, built entirely from millions of layered brushstrokes, produces chimeric creatures with an engraved precision, hovering between animal, human, and natural element. His monumental works, often completed over weeks outdoors, evoke states of metamorphosis and hybridization inspired by the local ecosystem. In 2019, he was commissioned by the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR) to paint the main facade of the museum.

Co-founder of the Santurce Vive and Los Muros Hablan festivals, Alexis Díaz has created murals in over 32 countries across all continents. He now lives in Florida while maintaining close ties with Puerto Rico, where he continues to contribute to public art projects.
