Biography
Matías Mata, known as Sabotaje al Montaje, is a Canarian artist born in 1973 in Lanzarote and based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria since childhood. He entered graffiti in 1990 and gradually developed a mural practice centred on neighbourhood portraiture: elders, sailors and popular Canarian figures rendered at large scale, freehand, without projection or grid.
His style sits between realism and abstraction: saturated flat colour, drips and geometric fragments that destructure the faces. He draws on street life and the neighbours he meets, and weaves portraits and abstract compositions within the same mural.
Present across the Canary Islands — Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, Lanzarote — and beyond, he received in 2023 the Impact Award at the International Street Art Awards for "Las entrañas de la memoria". He is one of the central figures of contemporary Canarian muralism.
