Biography

FONKi was born in 1990 in Paris to Khmer refugee parents who fled the genocide of the 1970s. Raised in Montreal, he discovered graffiti in 2005 and co-founded the FT crew. His triple cultural identity — Khmer, Canadian and French — has from the outset shaped an artistic practice focused on memory and cultural transmission.

A trip to Cambodia in 2012 was pivotal: FONKi relocated to Phnom Penh and developed the first contemporary Khmer lettering style, Kbach, blending Western graffiti techniques with the ornamental art of Angkor's temples. He founded FT Gallery at Factory Phnom Penh and launched the Murals for Cambodia Festival in 2022, bringing together international and local artists for monumental mural productions. He also co-produced the award-winning documentary The Roots Remain (2014), about his own family history.

His mural works are found in Phnom Penh, Montreal, Paris, London and Vietnam. He has collaborated with brands including Ubisoft, Vans and Christie's. As a curator and advocate for the Cambodian art scene, he actively works to position Phnom Penh as a cultural destination in Southeast Asia.
