Biography
Guido van Helten was born in 1986 in Brisbane, Australia. After practising graffiti in his youth in Melbourne, he studied visual arts at Southern Cross University in Lismore, New South Wales, majoring in printmaking. He turned to large-scale muralism professionally in 2012, developing an immediately recognisable style: monumental photorealistic portraits, executed with aerosol on raw, often corroded or weathered surfaces.
His works are defined by a subdued, often monochromatic palette and a melancholic atmosphere that gives the depicted faces striking emotional depth. In 2013, he took up an artistic residency in Iceland (Nes Artist Residency) and painted several murals in Reykjavík that helped establish his international reputation. In 2015, his grain silo project in Brim, Victoria, Australia was shortlisted for the Sulman Prize, awarded by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Among his best-known works are a mural on the Chernobyl cooling tower (2016), interventions in Greenville, South Carolina (2019), and an 8,000-square-metre installation on Wellington Dam in Collie, Western Australia (2021). He now lives in the United States and works across many countries.
